PÓZNAN (POLAND) Anna Hop – a choreographer, director, dancer, and educator, regarded as one of the most versatile and innovative artists of her generation – assumed the position of director of the Poznań Opera Ballet on October 15.
Anna Hop’s appointment as director of the ballet at the Poznań Opera House opens a new chapter in the institution’s history. Her experience, broad perspective on the performing arts, and keen awareness of the transformations in contemporary choreography provide an inspiring starting point for developing the company, building a repertoire that combines respect for tradition with the courage of artistic exploration, and strengthening the Poznań Ballet’s presence on the Polish and international artistic scene.
“I would like to emphasize that our Opera is a shared home for both the opera and the fleeting, ephemeral art of dance,” said Adam Banaszak, director of the Poznań Opera House, in an interview. “I want to highlight the importance of the ballet company, which is why we will have a ballet director, rather than a manager, as was the case previously. This change symbolizes a new way of thinking about ballet in the context of a modern cultural institution that is aware of its role,” he added.
Anna Hop’s body of work includes original ballet and opera productions created for leading Polish stages, as well as film and multimedia projects. An important aspect of her work is international projects that bring together diverse theatrical traditions and aesthetics. Her work is distinguished by her ability to combine classical technique with a sensitivity to current trends in dance. Her interests extend beyond ballet in the traditional sense, encompassing formal experimentation and dialogue with other art forms. She combines her choreographic experience with educational activities and support for young artists, including through the Polish National Ballet’s “Kreacje” project.
The artist’s achievements have been recognized with numerous awards, including: the ZAiKS “We Foster Imagination” Award (2025), the Terpsichore Statuette awarded by ZASP for outstanding achievements in the field of dance (2023), the Jan Kiepura Theater Music Award for Best Choreographer for ʺExodus” (2021), and the Bronisława Niżyńska Award in the “Pearls of Dance” competition for ʺThe Carnival of the Animals” (2019).
